1938 – 2013

LEWISTON — Francis R. Harmon, 74, of West Bowdoin, passed away Friday, April 26, at Central Maine Medical Center, with his family at his side.

He was born in Worcester, Mass., Aug. 22, 1938, a son of the late Vernon and Hazel Harmon. He moved to Maine at a young age and remained a resident of the state for the rest of his life.

On May 9, 1964, he married the love of his life, Valerie Hudson, in Paris, France. He was a lifetime military man, serving his country in the Vietnam War, and received the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. Upon retirement in 1981, he and Valerie settled down in West Bowdoin, where he spent much time woodworking and building numerous gardens at his home. In his younger years he was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Francis is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Valerie Harmon; two children, Stewart Harmon and wife, Shana, of Milford, N.H., Nicole Brown and husband, Rick, of Shelbyville, Ky.; two grandchildren, Justin J. Harmon and Elise M. Harmon; three sisters, Helen Krog, Lois Ames, Harriet Hudson; three brothers, Vernon, Ralph and Richard Harmon; and several nieces and nephews.
