1919 – 2013

NEEDHAM, Mass. — Laura Glenfield Legere, 93, wife of Oscar Legere, died peacefully on April 26 in Needham, Mass. She was a resident of Dedham, Mass., and was formerly of Rumford.

Laura was born in Rumford on Sept. 29, 1919, daughter of Richard and Mary (Leavitt) Glenfield. Laura graduated salutatorian from Stephens High School in 1937 and worked as a secretary in the research department at the Oxford Paper Co.

She was married to Oscar Legere on June 8, 1940, and they were chosen to represent Maine on Honeymoon Isle, Fla. During World War II she volunteered as a nurse’s aide at the Rumford Community Hospital. Laura and her husband were active in starting the first Cystic Fibrosis Association in Maine and served as secretary.

She studied art at the University of Maine Farmington and Portland School of Art. A well-known artist, her paintings have been displayed throughout Maine and The Villages in Florida. Laura was an avid reader and an accomplished seamstress and knitter.

She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, the Oakdale Country Club, the Mollyockett Mixers Square Dance Club of Rumford, the Orange Blossoms Club of Florida and sang with the St. John’s Choir and the Belle Chords Singing Group of Florida. Laura and her husband enjoyed traveling throughout the world in 40 countries. What she treasured most was the love and laughter of being with her family.

Laura is survived by her husband, Oscar, of Dedham, Mass.; three daughters, Karen and husband, Frank DiFranco, of Fall River, Mass., Jane and husband, Michael Dacey, of Boston, Mass., and Suzanne Legere of Saco; seven grandchildren, Christine, Veronica and Sandra DiFranco of Massachusetts; Jamie and husband, Ryan Diamond, and Leslie Chavez of Massachusetts; Oscia Morgan and Jesse Legere of Maine; three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two daughters, Patricia and Margaret Legere Stacey; and brothers and sisters, Mae Formalarie, Margaret Murrin, Amelia Hildreth, James Glenfield, Alma Shea, Rachael Glenfield, John Glenfield, Richard Glenfield, Edith Marascio and Edward Glenfield.
