PARIS — A Canton man accused of shaking a baby is being held on $500 cash bail.

Zachary L. Holtorf, 24, of 254 School St., faces charges of assault, domestic violence reckless conduct and endangering the welfare of a child.

According to a report by Trooper Jason Wing of the Maine State Police, Wing responded Monday to a report from Child Protection Services of an injured infant. The baby had been brought to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and was not breathing.

The hospital conducted tests and eventually sent the child home. The baby wasn’t bleeding but hospital staff found “a red spot on his back,” the report said.

Wing was told Holtorf may have shaken the baby, the report said. He went to Holtorf’s home late Monday night. Holtorf said he’d been trying to win a vacation for his girlfriend by calling in to a radio station contest earlier in the evening and couldn’t get the baby to stop screaming.

According to the report, Holtorf told Wing he held the baby and gave him a pacifier, but that the baby continued screaming. “He said that he only shook him ‘two times,’” the report said, and said Holtorf denied shaking the baby violently.

“Zachary admitted that he was frustrated because (the baby) was crying,” according to the report. “He said he didn’t realize what happened because it happened so fast.” Wing wrote that Holtorf seemed upset as he described the incident.

After putting the baby back into his bassinet, Holtorf told Wing, he noticed the baby was acting strangely, called the baby’s mother and they brought him to the hospital.

Holtorf is being held on $500 cash bail. If released, he is not allowed to have contact with the mother or the child. His arraignment is set for Sept. 3 in Oxford County Superior Court.
