Maine Black Flies 7, Central Maine Falcons 0
SOUTH CHINA — On Sunday, the Central Maine Falcons 13U team opened their regular season by taking on the Maine Blackflies in a twin bill at Erskine Academy in South China.
Garrett Aube worked a full count walk to open the contest. He promptly set the tone by stealing second. Josh Joy shut down the next two batters before Colby Emmertz doubled to right, driving in the game’s first run.
Blackflies starter James Sinclair found his groove early and stayed there, retiring the first 12 batters he faced, striking out nine as Falcons batters struggled to make contact. But Joy also settled in for the home team, limiting the Flies to a lone run and hit through three innings. But the visitors broke through in the fourth as Emmertz, Spencer Todd & Burnell eached singled. Two runs would score to make it 3-0 Blackflies.
Nate Goodine relieved Joy to start the fifth and was rudely welcomed when Sinclair, Emmertz, Cam Dube, and Todd each had singles which led to two more Flies runs, widening the gap to 5-0.
Goodine returned in the sixth but struggled with his control, walking two to start the inning before Sinclair drove the ball down the left field line for a two-run single, now 7-0 Flies.
Joy took the loss for the Falcons while Sinclair finished with 14 strikeouts for a Blackfly win.
Central Maine Falcons 6, Maine Black Flies 2
SOUTH CHINA — The Central Maine squad did not let the loss get them down in the second game as they came away with the 6-2 victory.
Emery started the Falcons second by driving a hard shot down the line past third before Austin Gilboe walked, runners now at 1st & 2nd. A wild pitch later, they were at 2nd & 3rd. Now with one out, Gavyn Jones reached on an errant throw from short, scoring Emery. Flies pitcher Aube then committed a balk allowing the runners to advance leading to a 2-0 Falcons lead before retiring the next two.
Damien St.Pierre continued to be efficient on the mound as he held the Flies hitless in the bottom of the second on only nine pitches. He helped his cause offensively with a two out single and stole second and third before Joy doubled to left-center for a third Falcons run before Aube shut the door.
The Flies kept the Falcons off the board in the top of the fourth before finally getting to St.Pierre in their half of the inning. Sinclair & Emmertz each singled, but were each erased on fielders’ choices, leading to runners at first and second. Cross reached on an infield single to load the bases. Cam Dube worked the count full of St.Pierre before stroking a single to right, tying the score 2-2.
The Falcons answered right back in the fifth when Nick Lombardi lined a one out single to left off Flies reliever Spencer Todd. Colby Dexter then tripled, St.Pierre singled and Josh Joy doubled as the Falcons regained the lead, 5-2. St.Pierre battled out of a bases loaded jam in the last half of the inning, ending it with a punchout.
Falcons catcher Dexter seemed to attract baseballs, getting plunked for the second time by Flies reliever Burnell. His excellent speed got him to second before an errant pick-off throw rolled into centerfield allowing him to score to run the Falcon lead to 6-2. That’s where it would stay as Howard took the mound in the bottom of the seventh, looking to preserve the lead.
The Falcons (1-1) host the Maine Mariners at 11 a.m. next Sunday.
