WINTHROP — Third baseman Matt Sekerak placed the tag during a pick-off play to end the game as Winthrop edged Dirigo 13-11 in MVC baseball action Friday.
Sekerak went 2-for-3 with a double and plated a pair of runs on offense for the Ramblers (5-0). Winthrop sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs in the fourth inning.
However, the Cougars (4-2) erupted for seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to knock Ben Allen from the mound. Dirigo closed the gap to within two the next inning. But the pick-off play prevented a reversal of fortunes.
T.J. Frost and Jack Brown tabulated three hits each for Dirigo.
Nokomis 6, Leavitt 1
NEWPORT — Zach Ramsdell had two hits as Nokomis jumped out to a 6-0 lead and eventually did away with Leavitt, 6-1, in a baseball game Friday.
For the Hornets, Nate Coombs Drew Gosselin each had two hits.
Brian Hiscock was credited with Leavitt’s only RBI.
Cony 11, Lewiston 2
LEWISTON — Zak Lachance rapped four hits, scored three runs and pitched six strong innings as Cony defeated Lewiston, 11-2, in KVAC baseball action Friday.
Reid Shostak and Taylor Carrier had two hits apiece, including one triple each, for the Rams (5-2). Eric Soucy and Ben Howell scored for the Blue Devils (5-2).
Erskine 3, EL 2
SOUTH CHINA — First baseman Josh Bailey singled in the winning run in the eighth inning as Erskine Academy secured a 3-2 victory over Edward Little in KVAC baseball action Friday.
The Red Eddies (1-6) took a brief 2-1 lead in the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Corey Henderson and Luke Sterling each had a hit and scored for Edward Little.
Bailey singled in Zack Isbell from second in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Eagles (2-5) the walk-off win.
Spruce Mountain 10, Monmouth 7
MONMOUTH — Spruce Mountain took advantage of two walks, two errors and five runs in the second inning to mount a 10-7 victory over Monmouth in MVC baseball action Friday.
Pitcher Payton Kennison went the distance and struck out 11 to notch the win for the Phoenix (5-2). Matt Vigue provided a pair of RBI’s for Spruce Mountain.
The Mustangs (5-1) tripped themselves up with six errors.
Alex Curtis roped a triple in the sixth inning for Monmouth. But, he was left stranded at third, and the team failed to garner any runs in the seventh.
Lacrosse
Morse 17, St. Dom’s 9
AUBURN — Alex Paulus netted a game-high five goals and Matt Buczkowski and Oliver Kruze added three each as Morse built on a one-goal halftime lead with a strong fourth quarter in a 17-9 win over St. Dom’s on Friday.
Grant Carrier lead the Saints (0-4) with four goals, while Nick Hatfield added three and Dalton Lorenz chipped in with two more.
Mt. Blue 6, Mountain Valley 3
RUMFORD — Ryan Rouillard scored a hat trick as Mt. Blue coasted to a 6-3 victory over Mountain Valley in MVC boys’ lacrosse action Friday.
Rouillard scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter to put the Cougars (1-5) up 3-0 before Austin Glover broke the Falcon’s (0-4) silence.
Glover scored a pair of goals in the third quarter for Mountain Valley to narrow the deficit to 4-3.
T.J. Williams had a pair of goals, while Matt Smith produced a single goal for Mt. Blue in the winning effort.
