AUGUSTA — Irene S. Bowden, 89, of Cotton Mill Apartments, Hallowell and formerly of Winthrop, passed away May 7, at MaineGeneral Medical Center.
Irene was born Jan. 13, 1924, in Monmouth, the first born to Benjamin and Leola (Curtis) Smith. She attended Monmouth schools and graduated from Monmouth Academy. She married Lloyd E. Bowden on Sept. 3, 1948 in Augusta.
Irene worked at Winthrop Woolen Mill and in a nursery while living in Connecticut. She liked to run errands for shut ins and sold laundry tickets and delivered meals at Cotton Mill Apartments, where she enjoyed many friends, especially Charlotte, Lee and Faith.
Irene enjoyed crafts, reading, working on genealogy, was an avid coin collector and enjoyed animals, especially cats.
She is survived by one brother, Wilbur Smith and his wife, Delores; four sisters, Ida Crocker, Pauline Bragdon, Ruth Travers and Nellie Rolfe and her husband, Raymond; as well as many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband; two brothers, Harry and Lewis Smith; half brother, Clint Smith; half sister, Helen Ridlon; sister-in-law, Dorine Smith; and niece, June Brown.
