This is a response to the May 2 column by Bill Webster, superintendent of schools in Lewiston.
The very first thing I noticed in his column was that not once did he ever point the finger of blame at himself. As children always try to do, it was/is everyone else’s fault that Lewiston’s children are apparently, in many instances, receiving a sub-par education.
It cannot be the teachers’ fault; it cannot be that some children simply do not want to learn.
Webster’s answer to the woes in Lewiston’s public school system is one he must have learned from our illustrious leaders in Washington: If it is broken or not working correctly, then, reason be damned, throw money at it.
People need only look at Webster’s school budget proposal — more and more money. To what end?
I will bet the grading won’t change but he will keep throwing all the money he can get his hands on at the problem, with no results, just an added burden on the sore backs of the taxpayers in the city of Lewiston.
Shame on Mr. Webster.
