Lilacs bloom in all their aromatic splendor at McLaughlin Gardens on Saturday during the four-day Memorial Day Weekend Lilac Festival in Paris, but heavy rain kept most everyone away, horticulturist Kristin Perry said. “Yesterday, people were in and out in between raindrops,” Perry said. “Today, it was a little heavier rain, so not as many people, but we’re hoping for Sunday and Monday to bring more people out. This is probably our best lilac bloom we’ve had in a long time. It’s really beautiful out there.” The blooming lilacs, 85 percent of which are French lilacs, are peaking and the cooler air allows them to hold their blooms longer, Perry said. The festival will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday and Monday.

Although the McLaughlin Garden Lilac Festival in Paris showcases lilacs, the garden has many other flowers and plants, such as these bleeding hearts that were thriving in the rain and cool weather.
