AUBURN — City officials will welcome a new $592,000 fire engine Saturday morning.
The new Engine 2 will operate out of the New Auburn station at 181 S. Main St. Firefighters will train on the truck for the next month, when it will officially become available for emergency calls.
Fire Chief Frank Roma said the new truck replaces a 1999 engine that is currently out of service but has been used as a reserve emergency vehicle. Roma said the old Engine 2 will be sold at auction.
Saturday’s ceremony will formally place the engine in service as well as mark the memory of Auburn fire Capt. Willis F. Millett, who died in 1952. Millett was captain of the city’s Engine 2 at the time and he died four days after rescuing a four-year-old girl from a Main Street fire. He was injured during that rescue.
“This program will reflect some of the proud traditions of the fire service as well as be a great community event,” Roma said in a written statement.
Tours of the new engine and the New Auburn station will be available and light refreshments will be served. Roma said he expects the ceremony to last about an hour.
