BRUNSWICK — Parkview Adventist Medical Center laid off 16 staff members  Monday, citing fewer patients, lower reimbursements and more debt.

The hospital had employed about 300 people.

“For years, Parkview has been working diligently on lowering costs for care to our patients, while increasing the quality of the care they receive,” President and CEO Randee Reynolds said in a news release. “The hospital will continue to meet the needs of the greater Brunswick community. Parkview truly belongs to this community.”

No services were being cut as a result of the layoff.

Central Maine Healthcare, based in Lewiston, had been interested in taking over Parkview, but put its Certificate of Need application to the state on hold in February. Neighboring Mid Coast Hospital loudly opposed that takeover.

“We have up to a year to start the process again and what we’re doing is looking at the feasibility process, how do we right-size Parkview, what’s the best services to have there,” CMHC spokesman Chuck Gill said Monday.

He said hospitals across Maine are experiencing an increase in charity care and bad debts, and since April, a 2 percent Medicare cut due to the federal sequester.

The staff cuts Monday were Parkview’s decision, Gill said.
