Hospital holding community tea

FARMINGTON — The Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will host a community tea on Wednesday, June 12, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Bass Room at Franklin Memorial Hospital. The tea, which is free and open to the public, will include information sharing, refreshments and live entertainment.

The tea will begin with refreshments of sandwiches, fresh strawberries and three kinds of loose leaf tea, while background piano music is performed by Dr. David Dixon. At 3:15 p.m. Rebecca Ryder, FMH president, will welcome the attendees; followed by Les Gatchell, outgoing Auxiliary president, who will discuss the mission of the Auxiliary; and then Jennifer McCormick, Healthy Community Coalition director, who will discuss the organization’s current health education and outreach initiatives.

The tea will conclude with entertainment by the Cavaliere Family Violinists.

Community breakfast June 5

OQUOSSOC — The next Ladies/Community Breakfast will be from 7 to 9 a.m. Wednesday June 5, at the Gingerbread House.

Bat Ecology Program June 6

MANCHESTER — A Bat Ecology Program will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at KLT’s Hutchinson Pond Conservation Area.

Aaron Svedlow and Trevor Peterson of The Maine Chapter of The Wildlife Society will lead a brief field trip to show how bats fit into the ecology of Maine’s forests, where bats go in the winter and how they navigate in the dark.

Participants can try their hand at recording bat calls using a “bat detector” to record ultrasonic echolocation calls.

Grange plans ‘souper’ supper

CHESTERVILLE — The Chesterville Grange will have a public “souper” supper on Friday, June 7, serving between 5 and 6:30 p.m.

Old South Church annual cookout

FARMINGTON — Old South First Congregational Church will hold its annual June cookout from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 8.

The free community luncheon includes sweet Italian sausage, peppers and onions, hamburgers, hot dogs, cole slaw, chops and cookies.

Genealogy group meets June 8

FARMINGTON — The Sandy River Valley Chapter, MGS, will meet at the Farmington Public Library, Saturday, June 8, at 10 a.m.

Emily Schroeder, from the Maine State Library, will explain how to make the best use of ancestry.com which is now available in many public libraries. Anyone with an interest in genealogy is welcome to attend.

Fairbanks School annual yard sale

FARMINGTON — For the past 13 years the Fairbanks School Neighborhood Association has hosted a yard sale on the school grounds at 508 Fairbanks Road, near Jack’s Trading Post. This year the sale will be held Saturday, June 8.

The sale will begin at 8 a.m. sharp to accommodate early bird buyers, and it will end at 1 p.m. The grounds will be packed with items ranging from furniture, lawn equipment, dishes, linens, books, crafting materials, a washer less than five years old, toys, knick knacks, some antiques and collectibles, and lots more.

If rain the sale will be postponed to a later date. Donations are welcome and organizers can pick up within a 20-mile radius of Fairbanks. For more information contact 778-3808 or 778-4349. Proceeds of this sale will help defray the cost of maintenance on the building.

CUFI event supports Israel

NEW PORTLAND — The Western Mountains Baptist Church will host a CUFI event on June 8 and 9. Christians United for Israel is the largest pro-Israel organization in the U.S.

Victor Styrsky, a pastor, author and the CUFI Eastern Regional Coordinator, will be the keynote presenter at a Leader’s Breakfast on Saturday morning beginning at 9. He will also be the speaker during the Sunday morning worship time, at 10.

Flag Day ceremony June 9

FARMINGTON — A Flag Day ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 9, at the Meeting House Park.

The eight American flags along with the MIA-POW flag will be displayed by the Western Maine Young Marines. The Emblem Club will do a flag folding ceremony and will lead in singing the national anthem and “America the Beautiful.”

The Farmington American Legion will perform a symbolic flag burning. If anyone has any flags that need to be disposed of, bring them with you.

All are welcome. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in the banquet room at the Farmington Elks Lodge on School Street in West Farmington.

Lasagna dinner at Masonic Lodge

NEW SHARON — A lasagna dinner will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at the Masonic Lodge Hall, Route 2.

The meal includes salad, garlic bread, pies, tea and coffee.

Take outs are available. Cost is $8 for adults, $6 for children and free for under 5. Proceeds benefit the building fund.

Ski Club plans annual meeting

FARMINGTON — The Farmington Ski Club will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, June 10, at the Titcomb Mountain Lodge in West Farmington. All Farmington Ski Club members are invited to attend. Meeting agenda includes approval of slate of new directors and of budget for 2013-14 season.

Strong Library summer program

STRONG — Readers of all ages from 3 to adult will explore all things underground this summer as Strong Public Library presents “Dig Into Reading” during their summer library program. Activities will include programs on archaeology as well as activities focusing on dinosaurs, construction vehicles, animals that live underground, caves and rocks.

There will also be drawing for both a girls’ and boys’ bicycle for the children as well as various other prizes for all ages.

The 2013 Summer Reading Program is open to people, preschool through adult, and will include programs, snacks, story time and more.

Solstice trail run June 22

FARMINGTON — The Summer Solstice Celebration Trail Run 4-Miler will take place Saturday, June 22, at Prescott Field.

Registration at 10 a.m. is $10. The race starts at 11. T-shirts will be given to the first 50 to register.

The course is a two loop trail along the scenic Sandy River. There is no pavement and no vehicle traffic over mostly flat terrain. It is a fast and fun course.

After the race there will be age group prizes, wood-fired pizza, organic gelato and non-alcoholic drinks.
