Bat Ecology Program June 6

MANCHESTER — A Bat Ecology Program will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at KLT’s Hutchinson Pond Conservation Area.

Aaron Svedlow and Trevor Peterson of The Maine Chapter of The Wildlife Society will lead a brief field trip to show how bats fit into the ecology of Maine’s forests, where bats go in the winter and how they navigate in the dark.

Participants can try their hand at recording bat calls using a “bat detector” to record ultrasonic echolocation calls.

Free movie night at Calvary Church

LEWISTON — Movie night at Calvary Methodist Church will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 7.

The movie will be “Killer In the Dark,” an award-winning free film about the United Methodist Churches’ work to end malaria in Africa.

Car wash benefits Relay For Life

SABATTUS — Support Team Cathy’s Crew and the American Cancer Society’s Androscoggin County Relay For Life with a benefit car wash from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at Primary Auto Sales, 96 Sabattus Road.

Burnt Meadow DAR meeting

WALES – Burnt Meadow Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at the Wales Masonic/Grange Hall, 322 Centre Road.

Troop 2431, Girl Scouts of Maine, will troop the colors and perform a flag folding ceremony for the chapter.

Golden Age Club meets June 11

AUBURN — Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish – Golden Age Club’s next meeting is Tuesday, June 11, at Sacred Heart Church.

Lakeside OES meets June 11

WALES – Lakeside Chapter 60, Order of the Eastern Star will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, at the Masonic/Grange Building, 322 Centre Road.

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing will offer a free Mediterranean diet workshop to anyone interested in learning more about eating healthy. “Beyond Olive Oil: The Mediterranean Diet and Cancer Prevention” will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 24, at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St.

The traditional Mediterranean diet pattern has a well-established beneficial role in overall health. Most notably, the countries surrounding the Mediterranean have a lower incidence of heart disease and certain forms of cancer. Oncology Dietitian Amanda Ettinger will discuss the health benefits are and how to apply this eating plan to your own life.

Senior Resource Fair is June 13

LEWISTON — The Androscoggin County Elder Abuse Task Force will  host their 4th annual Senior Resource Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 13, in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The resource fair features a variety of speakers on topics including financial scams, community services and prosecution of crimes targeting seniors, as well as information tables from local organizations that work with seniors.

The fair is being held at St. Mary’s LePage Center. It is free and open to the public but registration is required. Contact Denise at 783-1475 to sign up.

A free lunch and morning refreshments will be provided and prizes will be raffled off. 

Lymphedema workshop

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing will offer a free lymphedema workshop for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. “What is Lymphedema? Diagnosis and Treatment” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 17, at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St.

Lymphedema can be a side effect of certain cancers or treatments. The swelling ranges from mild, hardly noticeable, to extreme. Lorri Pelletier will help you to learn if you are at risk for lymphedema and discuss complications and treatments that can help reduce the swelling and discomfort.
