Superintendent Randall of the Auburn schools submitted to the School Board at a meeting held Wednesday evening his estimate of the amount needed for the city’s schools this year. The total estimate is for $32,000. These figures show an increase which is caused by the raise of the maximum salaries and the consequent advances for the teachers. The amounts asked are: $14,750 for the high school; $12,750 for the lower schools; $1,000 for manual training; $300 for evening school; $200 for medical inspection; and $3,000 for repairs and insurance.

Expressing his dislike of a citywide re-evaluation project, Lewiston’s Ward Seven Alderman Bill Jacques today said that the Finance Board cannot sign a contract for such a project without the signatures of the municipal officers. “The Board of Aldermen, the legislative body of this city, three times voted against a revaluation project. This proves the aldermen are not in favor if it,” Jacques said. “We’ll have am injunction against it,” Jacques reported, noting that the city has a full board of assessors, “who can do a good job now.”

Graduates of the Auburn Adult Education program on Friday received congratulations and some political campaign talk from U.S. Rep. Olympia Snowe of Auburn, who gave an audience of about 100 people a crash course on world trade imbalances and day care needs. “Right here in the Twin Cities, foreign companies have waged a virtual invasion of our markets,” Snowe said. “We are still dominant players, but we don’t write the rules anymore,” she said.
