The making of bricks is known to an industry in Lewiston and Auburn. There are five yards in operation in the two cities: George S. Pettingill yard and the Arthur H. Brooks yard on upper Main Street in Lewiston, Joseph Brooks on Washington Street in Auburn, Joseph Bergin in the Franklin yard in Lewiston, and George Ducharme on the South River Road in Lewiston. The lack of rain early this spring made it possible for the brick manufacturers to begin work May 6, the earliest for many years, and already at one of the yards there are more than 80,000 bricks, moulded, dried and ready for burning. Mr. Pettingill reports that one of his crews, three to a machine, can turn out 9,000 bricks a day.
