Miss Zula Grant, aged 26, living at 27 Bates street, was assaulted by an unknown man in the front room of that house at 1:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, a gag saturated in carbolic acid forced into her mouth and when she lost consciousness, the man ransacked bureaus, boxes, and broke open two children’s banks, securing in all about $6.50 in cash, but overlooking a gold watch which was in a fruit dish on a stand at the side of the room. “I started to go toward the front door,” Miss Grant said, “with a letter which I had just written to my sister, in my hand. I heard the closet door, there, open and the next thing I knew a hand was clasped over my mouth, and I was dragged backwards.” Two men were arrested about 2 o’clock on suspicion that they were connected in the crime.

The Auburn mall will host the second annual March of dimes Jail ‘n’ Bail fundraiser June 14, 15 and 16. The “jailbirds,” local business people, will post bail by calling their friends, family or business associates asking them to make a pledge to benefit the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. All “arrestees” spend approximately one hour in “jail” attempting to raise their bail. The jail, constructed out of Pepsi cans, is located at the Center Court in the Auburn Mall. The event is co-sponsored by Pepsi bottling company Seltzer and Rydholm, Inc.
