AUBURN — Edward Little High School will be represented by four young people this June at the annual Boys State and Girls State.
The program, offered each year to high school students as they end their junior year, introduces students to local and state government with the use of lectures, presentations by guest speakers and simulations. The week culminates with the election of a mock legislature, a governor and the working of bills through the legislature.
Students are chosen on the basis of their leadership, character and service. The American Legion runs Boys State; the American Legion Auxiliary runs Girls State.
Mason Bosse and Michael Hammond will attend Boys State at Thomas College in Waterville. Mason, the son of Andy and Debbie Bosse, is the junior class vice-president, a member of the Kick-Off Mentors council, the Youth Court and AVEC. He played baseball for ELHS his freshman year.
Michael, the son of Gregory and Debbie Hammond, has played soccer, basketball, hockey and baseball for the high school. He is the captain of the junior varsity baseball team.
Kennedy Hubbard and Rakiya Mohamed will attend Girls State at Husson University in Bangor. Kennedy is the daughter of Kimberly Bantos. She was the co-president of her class in her sophomore year. She has played varsity softball all three years and varsity basketball in her freshman and sophomore years. Throughout her high school career, she has been a member of the Class of 2014 Executive Board. She also is an ELHS mentor.
Rakija is the daughter of Asmo Dol. She has played basketball and field hockey for ELHS. She was president of her class for both the freshman and sophomore years. She has also served as the secretary of the French Club, a council member of the Kick-Off Mentor program and a team member for the Academic Decathalon.
Both programs are held during the week of June 16-21.
