I am an Auburn bus driver. I am sending this because Auburn’s mayor and superintendent of schools feel they will be saving money by subcontracting bus drivers’ jobs out to Northeast Charter in Lewiston.
I am concerned about the loss of the regular school bus drivers and that Auburn tax dollars would go to a Lewiston company. Also, it is possible for the children to see a different bus driver each week.
The Auburn school bus drivers have a union contract that ends in June, 2014. Every contract year, we have to listen to how there is no money; however, the superintendent, business manager and director of support services are all getting raises. I believe this action is to get the union out.
The Auburn School Department has not been honest with us.
Northeast already has two buses with us and one of them is someone that the support services director himself refused to hire.
How will the city save? The proposal is to subcontract just drivers; maintenance would still be Auburn’s responsibility and the buses would stay at the Auburn bus garage, which Auburn taxpayers also would be totally responsible for, plus paying for a transportation director and administrative assistant.
There needs to be a change in the Auburn School Department and School Committee. The bus jobs should stay in Auburn.
Perhaps the proposal should be voted on by the people. When officials become self-serving, it is time to go.
