Mr. F. E. Stanley of Newton, Mass, formerly of Lewiston, is winning the highest honors in the violin world, similar to those which he has already attained in the automobile line. Mr. Stanley has just presented to Mr. B.H. Dingley of Auburn his latest violin creation, a Stradivarius fashioned along original lines with back and sides of whitewood and top of spruce. For several years, Mr. Stanley has been experimenting in the private offices of the Stanley Brothers’ Automobile Factory in Newton, and the result is a series of violins that mark a new epoch in modern violin-making. Several of Mr. Stanley’s violins are now in use by members of the Boston Symphony orchestra and their favorite pupils. Similar praise can be bestowed upon the violinist work of Mr. F.O. Stanley of Newton, who has been working side by side with his brother.

The Lewiston Planning Board will take a boat trip up the Androscoggin River tonight to survey the area for possible recreation purposes. The group plans to sail upstream as far as the North Turner Bridge. They will take a close look at the entire Gulf Island Pond area. When the boat trip is over, the board plans to visit the Taylor Hill area, which has been mentioned as a possible picnic site.

More than 300 people participated Sunday in the seventh annual Androscoggin Challenge Triathlon, a 38-mile course of running, cycling and canoeing whose top honor was captured by a star of previous years. Barry Fifield, who finished second in 1987’s Ironman category, took first place with the time of 2:53:58. The only solo woman to finish the vent was Becky Lougee with a time 4:09:47. The athletes ran 6.2 miles in Lewiston, canoed six miles in the Androscoggin River, then bicycled roughly 25 miles around Lake Auburn before finishing at the Lewiston Memorial Armory.
