LEWISTON — Lisbon Street’s Prose Gallery was transformed into a comedy club on May 11 as 10 comedians put on a pair of shows that raised $1,052 for victims of the recent fires. The money was donated to the YWCA Lewiston Fire Victims Fund.
Lewiston Auburn Magazine publisher Joshua Shea and Comedy Fix founder Mark Turcotte organized the event five days before people began finding their seats in preparation for a night of laughs.
“I hate to say it was thrown together…but it was thrown together,” Shea said. “But, this is proof that when you’re doing something for a good cause, you can pull a fantastic night of comedy with two different lineups and two different audiences together. It was our honor to donate our Prose Gallery space to be used for this.”
Turcotte hosted fellow Maine comedians Stephen Cloutier, Mark Reilly, Kevin Neales, Dee Turcotte, Brian Brinegar, Connor McGrath, Jake Jacobson, Ian Stuart and Ryan Waning.
“The support from the community and the comedians, who donated their time and talent, was so encouraging,” Turcotte said. “With less than a week to promote, we weren’t sure what to expect. We had great crowds for both shows and shared a lot of laughs for a worthy cause.”
The Dempsey Challenge and Advocates for Children donated raffle items, including a Patrick Dempsey autographed T-shirt, Subway gift card and Starbucks coffee basket.
Encouraged by the success of the show, Shea and Turcotte plan to bring more stand-up comedy to Prose Gallery beginning in July.
