DIXFIELD — The Dixfield-Dirigo Alumni Association will hold its annual potluck supper and meeting from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at T.W. Kelly Middle School.
There will be a social gathering from 4 to 5 p.m. followed by a potluck supper and a short meeting from 5 to 7 p.m.
Weld resident Gayle Davis, who graduated from Dirigo High School in 1967 and has been involved with the Alumni Association off and on for eight years, said the meeting is not meant exclusively for Dirigo graduates.
“We’re very much an open group,” Davis said. “Anyone who went to a Dixfield school, whether it was elementary, middle or high school, is invited. In fact, we have some people that attend who never graduated from Dirigo since they fought in the war instead.”
Davis said a majority of the alumni who show up for the meetings tend to be members of the older generation. However, she added, the Alumni Association has started a committee dedicated to reaching the younger graduates.
“We figured we could reach the younger generations through social networking,” Davis said. “We’re going to start a Facebook group and see if people would like to join.”
The money raised through donations at the meeting, as well as the dues that Alumni Association members pay over the course of each year, go toward student scholarships.
“We have about 350 members in the Alumni Association right now, and even though a lot of them live out of town, they still send in their dues,” Davis said. “Between the money raised through dues and donations, we usually have enough money for between six and eight $1,000 scholarships.”
Davis added that former Dirigo English and French teacher Nat Weston, who is turning 100 years old, will be honored at the annual meeting. Weston was responsible for running the school’s Glee Club and was active in the community’s church choir group.
“This is the first time that our group has ever honored someone at the meeting, and we plan on doing it in the near future as well,” Davis said. “We’re planning to give her a corsage and speak about her a little bit.”
