AUBURN — The YMCA is under new — and old — management after Executive Director Brian DuBois resigned.
Former Executive Director Jim Lawler, 61, has come out of retirement and is serving as the interim director, Lawler said Thursday. DuBois, who was hired in 2009, resigned the first week of June. Lawler declined to say why.
“I can’t comment,” he said. “The only thing I can tell you it was a mutual agreement between him and the board. It was an amiable split.” He added that DuBois was looking to re-enter the private sector.
“I was enjoying my retirement,” Lawler said. “I got the phone call.”
Before he retired, Lawler worked for the Y for 29 years, including 21 years as executive director.
DuBois is a 1988 graduate of Edward Little High School. He attended Bentley University and worked in private business before hired by the YMCA.
Lawler said a search for a new director will be launched this fall. “They will be starting a search process,” he said. “The YMCA of USA has a whole division of a committee that seeks out CEOs. We will be working with them.”
The Y expansion, moving from the downtown Turner Street location to a bigger facility, which was a goal of DuBois, will continue, Lawler said.
The Y is now in a transition period, he said. “This fall, we’re looking to have a board retreat to revisit what steps to take,” he said.
Ninety acres off the Stetson Road has been purchased. The Y hopes to partner with other groups to share the space and costs. Moving and expanding is “still our intent,” Lawler said.
