WATERVILLE — A Waterville man who is no stranger to police is facing multiple charges after threatening to unleash his dogs on an officer early Friday.
Police had attempted to question Brian Charette, 33, after officers were dispatched to a Water Street address for an assault report, Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said.
Charette had assaulted a male acquaintance and fled the scene, Rumsey said. Shortly after midnight, Waterville police Officer Andrew McMullen located the suspect walking with two pit bulls.
Even though the dogs were leashed, Charette threatened to have the dogs attack the officer if McMullen questioned him, Rumsey said. When the officer got out of his cruiser, Charette thrust the hand holding the leashes toward McMullen, and the dogs grew aggressive.
McMullen took no chances, subduing the animals and Charette with pepper spray, and Charette was quickly taken into custody, Rumsey said. He is charged with attempted aggravated assault, assault and refusing to submit to arrest.
Rumsey said McMullen has a lengthy criminal record, but details of his past crimes were not available.
McMullen was brought to Kennebec County Jail and released on bail Friday afternoon.
