One of artist Don Thayer’s best-known works is a large oil painting of Helen Hanscom standing in the doorway of her antique store called “The Browsing Shop” where the Washburn & Johnson Fine Art Gallery located in 2010.

FARMINGTON — A new exhibit of Don Thayer’s art will open on Friday, July 19 at the Washburn & Johnson Fine Art Gallery, 155 Front St. Browse these well-known works of local scenes and share in an opening reception from 3-7 p.m.

In the 1960s, Don Thayer and his family took over the Red Barn on Route 2 where they lived and ran a studio-art gallery in the large adjoining barn. Thayer painted many local scenes in various media including oil, watercolors, pastels, and pen and ink.

After selling the Red Barn, Thayer moved to Portland, Maine where he worked as a resident artist for many decades. He often commissioned portraitures, cityscapes, and scenes of Casco Bay. In 1979 he completed a 53’ x 10’ mural of Portland’s landmark Union Station in Portland’s Exposition building. He then collaborated on the well-known trompe l’oeil mural on the exterior wall of the Monks Building facing Tommy’s Park in the Old Port.

Thayer, age 89, still paints and writes every day at his home in Edgewater, Florida.
