HARRISON — Sebago-Long Lake Music Festival will present the third concert of its 41st annual chamber music series at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Deertrees Theatre. Mahler and Brahms explores the breadth and variety of the Romantic era with music for every taste.

The concert will open with the “Wagner” Adagio for Clarinet and Strings, a soft, dreamy, fluid piece demonstrating the flexibility and beautiful tone of the clarinet. Flute and piano join the clarinet and strings for the first of two completely contrasting works, originally written for orchestra, but arranged by Arnold Schoenberg for small chamber group.

Johann Strauss’s familiar Emperor Waltz may bring a smile to your face, and inspire you to dance in your seat. Reflection is in order for Gustav Mahler’s poignant Songs of a Wayfarer. Percussion and a modern-day harmonium (synthesizer) complete the instrumental group. Boston baritone David Kravitz will perform as the vocal soloist for this bittersweet set of songs which portray feelings stirred by love lost: alienation from Nature, anger, grieving, despair, and finally gentle wistfulness.

The concert will conclude with Johannes Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F Minor. One of the most expressive works ever composed in the Romantic style, this expansive work, rich in texture and variety of moods, achieves an almost perfect blending of piano and string instruments.
