FREEPORT — A 53-year-old Brunswick man was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with internal and possible neck injuries following a single-car crash Monday morning on Interstate 295. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Witnesses reported seeing a 2010 Toyota Corolla drift into the breakdown lane, continue over an embankment and into a ditch before striking a large rock, rolling over and then slamming into a rock ledge, Maine State Police Trooper Douglas Cropper said.
The highway was closed briefly while firefighters cut off the top of the car to get to the man, who was wearing his seatbelt and was trapped with the car on the driver’s side, according to Cropper.
The LifeFlight of Maine helicopter rescue service was called, and landed on I-295, but the chopper was unable to transport the man due to his weight, Cropper said, so a Freeport ambulance drove him to the Portland hospital.
“There was definitely some swelling in his abdomen and his legs were pegged under him, his arm was outside the window underneath the car and his neck was in an awkward position for quite some time, so they were looking at him for neck injuries,” the trooper said. “He was still alive when he left the scene but we’re not sure where he is now.”
No further information about the man’s condition or identity was immediately available.
