PARIS — The L.O.O.K Program (Learning Opportunities for Our Kids) has been serving children in the Oxford Hills every summer for more than 20 years. This year, it will run during the weeks of July 15-19 and July 22-26, at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.
Teachers of all sorts are preparing to teach week-long enrichment workshops during two sessions every morning. The program offers a wide variety of subjects to interest everyone. Some topics to be pursued are drawing, hula-hoop dancing, map building, inventing, river studies, Asian cultures, pottery, French, animals, yoga, rainforests, fairy house building and Lego Technics.
Some classes are designed for 4 to 7 year olds and some for older children. The L.O.O.K program is a bargain at only $35 per class.
Teacher/administrator Mark Otterson founded the program so that children in this area could enjoy learning something new and exciting without travelling a great distance. Students come back again and again, and when they are older, often choose to volunteer in the program they have loved. Some students work toward being teachers themselves and eventually offer classes of their own.
Sebago-Long Lake Music Festival is offering “Stories in Music,” an interactive performance by festival artists, at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 25. This concert is free to all L.O.O.K. participant families, and a minimal admission is charged for the general public. The concert is for all ages.
