Auburn Suburban 15U Babe Ruth All-Star team won the Area 2 District Championship held in Lewiston to advance to the state tournament being held in Auburn this weekend.

Auburn had to come out of the consolation bracket after losing its opening game to MidCoast South, 2-1. Over the next four games, Auburn exploded offensively, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 41-4 and getting strong pitching and exceptional defense.

In a 7-3 win over Lewiston, ASLL got strong pitching from Brandon Varney and was led offensively by Austin Cox and Jarod Plourde with two hits apiece. Lewiston’s Austin Wing pitched well in the loss.

ASLL blanked Tri-County, 11-0, behind the complete-game, two-hit shutout pitching of C.J. Jipson. Varney and Brandon Knapp were repeat hitters for Auburn.

In the fourth contest, Auburn banged out 15 hits and avenged the loss to MidCoast South in a 15-0 rout. Varney and Cox combined on the shutout. Lashua and Cox collected three hits apiece with Lashua also knocking in four runs. Will Garand and Tyler Blanchard also banged out two hits for Auburn.

The onslaught continued in the championship game, a 9-1 victory over MidCoast South. Llewellyn Jensen pitched four shutout innings to get the win and also helped his own cause with two hits and a pair of RBIs.

Other repeat hitters for Auburn were Varney, Cox and Blanchard. Auburn Suburban will face the winner of Area 1 in the first round of the state tournament Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Auburn Suburban Sports Complex. The winner of the tournament will represent Maine in the New England tournament in Newtown, Conn., on August 2.
