SABATTUS — Gwenyth Fraser, a senior from Oak Hill High School, was named a winner of the Herff Jones Award and chosen to receive a $2,000 scholarship.

The Herff Jones Believe in You Scholarship & Principal’s Award program, launched in 2012, recognizes 50 student leaders nationwide who display both academic excellence and strong leadership skills with $120,000 in scholarships.

Winners were notified in April and will receive their scholarship checks in August.

Nominees were evaluated on the basis of academic performance, standardized test results, work experience, participation in student activities, community service and their response to the essay question, “Please explain how a person believing in you has had a positive impact on your success. What did he/she do and how did it help?”

“Gwen is an outstanding young lady who is a leader in student government, young writers (a community writing group), music both vocal and band, civil rights team and as the founder of Raider Chatter a student newsletter. Gwen leads by example by giving her best in all that she does,” said Patricia Doyle, principal of Oak Hill High School, in her nomination.

Fraser plans to study creative writing when she attends Brandeis University in the fall.
