Sunday skating in Bridgton

BRIDGTON — Public skating will take place in July at Bridgton Ice Arena from noon to 2 p.m. on Sundays, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, and from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.Cost is $4 for adults, $3 for grades 1-12, $2 for children under 6 and seniors 62 or older. Rental cost is $4.

Stick and Puck will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

Cost is $5.

A night visit to wildlife park

GRAY — It’s time to plan for a night visit at the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray, with Northern Stars Planetarium from 6:30-9  p.m. on Saturday July 27.

An inflatable star theater will be set up inside the Fox gazebo where a star projector, slides, video and special effects will introduce kids to astronomy and space science.

Join John Meader, the planetarium educator at Northern Stars, for a fun and educational exploration of the night sky. The presentation is called “The Wonderful Sky” and will explore constellations, visible planets, meteors, the Sun, the Moon, and maybe even comets.

Tickets for each of the four consecutive shows will be distributed to visitors as they enter the park.

About 25 people at a time will be able to participate in each show.

Before or after the star shows, scheduled at 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8 p.m., and 8:30 p.m., visitors can walk around the park learning more about astronomy and what our wildlife does in the dark.

Korean War veterans to be honored

PARIS — The Floyd A. Harlow Jr. VFW Post 9787, located at 58 E. Main St., will hold a chicken pie supper on Saturday, July 27, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in honor of Korean War Recognition Day.

Cost of the supper is $8 for adults for $4 for children under 12.

There will be a special table for Korean War veterans at the public supper, and their meals will be free of charge, according to Onni Raasumaa, organizer of the event and a Korean War veteran.

Silent auction at Wayne library

WAYNE — The Cary Library’s Silent Auction, a Wayne summer tradition,will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 27. The auction will be set up at the Williams House, across the street from the library at 14 Old Winthrop Road.

The display will include hand-crafted items, art and needlework, attic or antique treasures, pottery and glassware, old photographs and other unique donations. In addition, bids will be taken on fun “home-grown” experiences such as cooking classes, lessons, excursions and other adventures reflecting a Wayne flair.

The auction also opens on Saturday and will run for two weeks during (most) library hours, with close of bidding at noon on Saturday, Aug. 10. Proceeds from the auction support the library’s operating budget, and all are invited to be part of the fun. FMI: 685-3612.

Brunwick Mall to host Peace Fair

BRUNSWICK — Zoe Weil, president of the Institute for Humane Education, will speak about educating young people to become “solutionaries” on Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Brunswick Mall.

This presentation is part of the ninth annual Peace Fair, held at the mall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Zoe will be collaborating with Maine artist Robert Shetterly, whose portraits “Americans Who Tell The Truth” have brought him broad and enthusiastic recognition and a schedule that takes him to workshops with students and teachers all over this country. Fifteen of Rob’s portraits are at Curtis Library’s Morrell Community Room through July 31.

Scarlet Cadets seeking alumni

LEWISTON — Alumni of the Scarlet Cadets will be reuniting for the first time in approximately 45 years on Saturday, Aug. 10

Farmers get FSA filing extension

WASHINGTON — USDA Farm Service Agency has extended the FSA acreage reporting deadline. Farmers and landowners have an additional 18 calendar days to submit their annual report of acreage to their local FSA county office, with the deadline extended to Friday, Aug. 2.

Only the FSA reporting deadline has been extended. The acreage reporting requirement for crop insurance has not changed and was due July 15.

Teddy Bear Scramble in Gray

GRAY — The eighth annual Teddy Bear Scramble for the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Portland will be held with a 8:15 a.m. shotgun start on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Spring Meadows Golf Club, Route 100. Registration is from 7 to 8 a.m.

Prizes include $300 for first place, $200 second place, and $150 third place. There will be long drive and nearest-to-the-pin costs for men and women.

Cost is $70 per person, includes green fees, cart, barbecue lunch and beverage. Checks should be made payable to Children’s Dyslexia Center. All fees must be paid by Aug. 2.

Maine Academy sponsors music contest

PORTLAND — The Maine Academy of Modern Music, in collaboration with the Maine Center of Creativity, is conducting a songwriting contest to select an original song by a Maine songwriter to be used in a music video project.

All Maine songwriters are invited to participate. The winning song will be professionally recorded and featured in a music video produced in the spirit of “Be in Love,” which was released in 2012.

The winning video will focus on celebrating Maine and its talented creative arts community and will premiere on Playing For Change Day in September 2014. The winning songwriter will also be awarded a Grand Prize of $1,000 from Asylum Nightclub & Music Venue, Portland.

Equity Fund invites proposals

LEWISTON — The Equity Fund of the Maine Community Foundation seeks grant proposals for projects that serve Maine’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning community. Applications for project grants in rural and other under-served communities are particularly encouraged, as are proposals for capacity-building support.

Red Hat Day in November

AUGUSTA — The Ruby Gems, a Red Hat group in Augusta, will host a Red Hat anniversary celebration on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Calumet Club in Augusta.
