Since the recent disastrous fires at East Auburn, there has been a great deal of feeling regarding the inadequate fire protection in that locality. I.J. Martin, whose buildings were burned Monday evening, said Thursday morning that he thought East Auburn needed a reservoir. A reservoir would not only be useful in case of fire, but would supply East Auburn with water service. Another thing that might be practicable is a gasoline engine on trucks that could be taken to the brook or to the lake to pump water. Chief Merrill of the Auburn fire department is in favor of a chemical tank truck. Mayor Fowles said what East Auburn needs is something for temporary protection. “When we get our new auto truck they will be properly taken care of. That was the object of getting the pump in connection with the truck.”

Lewiston Mayor Donia J. Girard has ordered that the American flag be flown from the city building each day from now on. The order was issued Tuesday, yesterday morning the flag went up. The flag at the public library also should be displayed every day, the mayor said. Exceptions in each case could be when the weather is inclement. In general, the city building flag has been flown only on holidays and some other special occasions.

Peace Corps representatives returned to Lewiston this week for the first time in seven years. “Interest is definitely way up,” recruiter Arthur Walsh said. “I’m not really sure why, but we’re getting applications from people of all ages and all backgrounds.” Lewiston-Auburn is an obvious choice for recruiting, not only because it is a metropolitan area but because of its French-speaking population. The language is often used by volunteers in Africa.
