ELLSWORTH — The body of a former Bangor radiologist was found early Friday morning in Green Lake, according to the Maine Warden Service.

Ellsworth police received a call around 11:40 p.m. Thursday that Frank Mroz, 66, of Manchester, N.H., had not returned from a dive in Green Lake, warden service Cpl. John MacDonald said Friday in a written statement.

Mroz, an experienced underwater diver who was using scuba gear, had indicated to a relative that he was going to fix a submerged mooring in front of a camp. He was last seen by his wife diving in front of the camp.

According to the statement, Mroz was found deceased in Green Lake by Ellsworth police approximately 30 feet from shore shortly after midnight.

Mroz recently had retired from a career as a radiologist and nuclear medicine specialist who had affiliations with roughly a dozen Maine hospitals, including Eastern Maine Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth and C.A. Dean Hospital in Greenville, according to several medical websites.

A 1973 graduate of Albany Medical College, Mroz became interested in a medical career as an elementary school student who lived next to a veterans hospital in Manchester, N.H., according to a profile of Mroz and his wife, Paula, on the Albany Medical Center website.

He first served as the DJ at the hospital’s in-house radio station and later as a volunteer lab technician, which led to a paid tech position at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, N.H. He went to medical school on an Air Force scholarship, retiring as a colonel after serving 16 years with the Air Force and another 16 years in the Army Reserves, according to the profile.

Mroz also had a 31-year career in private practice in Bangor, where he retired as a principal of Spectrum Medical Group.

The incident remains under investigation, MacDonald said. No further information was immediately available.
