A world’s record went smash at the great race meet at the Lewiston fairgrounds on Thursday afternoon when young Macy teamed Earl Jr. to the wire in 2.08 flat in the last heat of the free-for-all. It was the fastest heat ever trotted on a half mile track in the world. The final heat in the great free-for-all was a remarkable one. The seven horses had gone five fast heats, there had been two bad smashes and the winning horse was being handled by a strange driver. This was a combination which did not tend to give reasons for expecting fast racing, but when the grey horse came down the stretch, the purple and gold of the driver’s uniform flashing in the sunlight, he proved that he was a race horse with staying qualities and speed.

Rex is going home today. Rex, alias Brownie, is the mixed shepherd dog found wandering on the Snow Road. Durham, last Dec. 14, two days after he somehow escaped from a major fire which destroyed the farm home and buildings of his owners, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bowie Sr. of the Stackpole Road, Durham. Rex, then unknown and almost dead, ended up at the K-9 Shangri-La animal shelter in Auburn where he was nursed back to health. In February, he was recognized by two Durham residents, and eventually the owners, who had been living with relatives, were located. Now the Bowies have a new home on the site of the one destroyed by fire, and Rex is with them.

The Auburn Public Library, Lewiston Public Library, Central Maine Medical Center and Livermore Falls High School are among more than 100 libraries from Kittery to Fort Kent which will begin using MaineCat, a mammoth catalog of the holdings of libraries all over Maine. Under a Maine State Library program funded by the Legislature, each library will receive MaineCat computer equipment and a $500 grant-in-aid toward the cost of a compatible personal computer.
