STONINGTON — Stonington’s Main Street may be one of the unique and most beautiful places in Maine. The state’s busiest working waterfront, landing more lobster than any other port, it is an entry to Maine’s largest archipelago; Acadia National Park’s Isle au Haut section; and is a remarkable and historic example of New England Gothic architecture — of the type loved and documented by 20th-century American painter Edward Hopper.

From 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, Opera House Arts will bring Hopper’s work to life with an evening of activities devoted to exploring the connections between the two, including a free, sneak preview performance of “Voyeur,” the installation-dance-video work by Bridgman/Packer in performance at the Opera House August 15-18.

Register on the Opera House deck for a Main Street scavenger hunt for unique Gothic, Hopper-esque architectural elements. Stay for a live tableau, based on Hopper paintings. Free food will be served on the deck from 6-7 p.m.

“The scale and scope of this work is something audiences north of Portland, and especially in small communities such as ours, rarely get to experience,” said Judith Jerome, OHA’s artistic director. “And the connection to the work of Hopper aligns with the aesthetic of the Opera House’s home in downtown Stonington.”

Isalos Fine Art will host a show by painter Philip Koch which draws on the work of Hopper. The paintings of “Inside Hopper’s World: Paintings by Philip Koch” are a result of Koch being given unprecedented access to Hopper’s Cape Cod studio, complete with Hopper’s easel and the views that inspired iconic paintings.

Pre-register by calling 207-367-2788. Tickets for the performances may be obtained at www.operahousearts.org; or by calling or visiting Opera House Arts’ box office, on the corner of Main and School Streets. All shows are at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 for premium reserved seating; $20 general admission; with fixed income and student discounts available. Island Students Free, including students in the Brooklin and Sedgwick schools.
