DEAR SUN SPOTS: Do you have any recommendations for organizations that could use fabric and yarn? My mother has accumulated some over the years and we’d like to donate to help with a local cause. Thank you. — Angela via email

DEAR SUN SPOTS: After many years of collecting fabric, sewing, etc., I now have to downsize my considerable “stash” and some of the many craft supplies and fabrics collected over the years. Now I only make pillowcases, quilts and other items using cottons or polyester-cotton blends.

Is there any nonprofit group that does sewing or crafts that would like to have these items? There are all types of materials from bits of lace fabric to corduroy and materials suitable for covering chair seats, a bit of everything. Also my grandmother’s button box as well as lots of buttons I’ve collected, all to be given away. — Beverly, bstevens@megalink.net, 674-2481.

ANSWER: Sun Spots has not done as good a job as she would like collating the names of groups who take fabric and yarn. If your organization is interested, please write so she can remedy that failing.

A recent offer of fabric drew a response from Denise Pettengill, director of the Androscoggin County Chapter of Newborns in Need. She said they accept fabric (cotton or flannel especially), batting, thread, yarn, and crochet and knitting needles.

You can reach her at Lewiston@newbornsinneed.org. or at 795-6538.

Sun Spots also has a regular request for yarn from Germaine Nolan in Lewiston, 777-1593, who knits blankets for the cats at the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society. Germaine is nearly 90 and doesn’t drive, so you’d need to deliver or mail the yarn to her.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for all your help with events concerning the L & A Veterans Council as well as Meadowview Senior Complex trips.

I’m addressing individuals who have called me and left a message. Unfortunately, I’m often unable to get people’s names from their messages. Many people want me to call them back but don’t leave a number.

Please try to remember that some of us are getting older, including myself at 81. It is very difficult for us to pick up your name on our answering machine as well as your phone number, partially because you say it so fast on the phone.

So please, if I haven’t returned your call, I’m sure that is one of the reasons why, so call again please. — Bert Dutil, 786-2305, badutil32@yahoo.com

DEAR SUN SPOTS: A week or so ago someone inquired about some different names that were also places. One of the names was Alcohol Mary. This was a real person. There is a road in Greenwood named for her.

For information the person should contact Blaine Mills, a local historian in Lockes Mills. You can email him at mmills@megalink.net. — Ramona, roverramon@megalink.net
