Salt Bay Chamberfest concludes its festival, Music of the People, with two events this week. The final evening concert is at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Aug.16, at the Darrows Barn at Round Top in Damariscotta. It features the Brentano String Quartet performing Bartok’s String Quartet #4, and with pianist Thomas Sauer, the Ives Piano Trio and Schumann’s Piano Quintet. Founder and Artistic Director Wilhelmina Smith will play cello in the Schumann.

The Brentano String Quartet has gained an international reputation for their artistry and their commitment to new music. Furthermore, they recently hit the silver screen. The Brentano is behind the sound in the critically acclaimed film “A Late Quartet,” starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken and Catherine Keener, and directed by Yaron Zilberman, released late in 2012. Based on Beethoven’s late quartet, opus 131, the film uses the Brentano’s recording of this great work as the basis of its soundtrack. Cellist Nina Lee even has a walk-on role (appearing as herself).

For the second season, Salt Bay Chamberfest, the Damariscotta River Association and the Lincoln Theater have offered a two-week camp for children ages 9-12. This year’s Music and Nature Camp brings together naturalist Sarah Gladu and composer/bassist Jon Deak, creator of the New York Philharmonic’s highly successful “Very Young Composers,” to offer campers an immersion in nature and its sounds. They learn to express themselves by writing their own piece of music. These compositions will be premiered in a free Family Concert at the Lincoln Theatre on at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, alongside other works by nature-inspired composers including Dvorak and Haydn, performed by the Brentano String Quartet.
