OXFORD — Police say speed was a factor in a single-vehicle crash on Hebron Road at approximately 9 p.m. Monday.

According to Oxford police Chief Jon Tibbetts, Harald Starnegg, 52, was driving south on the winding, hilly road when he lost control of his 1999 Subaru Outback and it flipped onto the driver’s side.

Starnegg was not hurt, Tibbetts said. There are no charges and police are not investigating, he said.

The Hebron Road has been busy this week, as drivers use it as a detour to get around a section of Route 119 between South Paris and Hebron that has been shut down since Monday.

Tibbetts said he couldn’t say if the detour had anything to do with Starnegg’s crash, but wouldn’t be surprised.

“We’re getting a ton of traffic through there,” Tibbetts said, “we’re trying to keep the speeds down.”

From Hebron, the detour took drivers down Route 124 to Mechanic Falls and then Route 121 into Oxford, a considerable distance. Many drivers were taking the shorter route on Hebron Road instead, Tibbetts said.
