Sayen, one of Lyceum Gallery’s resident artists, spent months going to the railroad yard in South Paris early in the morning or in the evening to photograph the art that rolled in that day. He published a book titled “Fr8s” that shows the work of graffiti artists. The images were part of an exhibit at University of New England.

Graffiti is a very contemporary art form. The bold colors and balloon letters are familiar characteristics. Boxcar artists have an international audience for their work. A car tagged in a Maine rail yard at midnight on a Thursday could be in Montreal on Friday, Chicago on Sunday, and Los Angeles on the next Thursday. The experienced boxcar artist creates designs that work with the structure of the car and never paints over the car numbers. If railroad personnel cannot see the numbers, the paint is immediately scrubbed.

Sayen is a nationally known artist and photographer, craftsman and writer. His art has appeared in museums and private collections in many countries.

The exhibit runs through Saturday, Aug. 31, at the 49 Lisbon St. gallery. For more information, call 207-576 4805.
