SCARBOROUGH — Scarborough police confirmed Sunday morning that one person was struck by a southbound Amtrak Downeaster train near the Black Point Road underpass at about 8:15 a.m.

The male victim — whose name has not been released — apparently ran in front of the train while trying to cross the tracks between the crossing at the old Cook Concrete plant on Highland Avenue and the Black Point Road overpass, according to Scarborough Police Det. Sergeant Rick Rousse.

The man was conscious when emergency personnel arrived and was taken to Maine Medical Center with “serious” injuries, he said.

A preliminary investigation by Scarborough police determined that there were no other victims. Officers secured the scene until investigators from the Boston & Maine railroad police arrived from Billerica, Mass., Rouse said.

“From what I heard from the Boston & Maine [railroad] police, that stretch of the track has a lot of people either walking dogs or running,” he said. “It’s one of those areas they have problems with.”

According to an alert on the Amtrak Downeaster website, train 692 — which left Brunswick at 7:05 a.m., left Portland at 8 a.m. and was due in Boston at 10:30 a.m. — would be delayed approximately one hour “due to an incident with a trespasser on the railroad tracks.”

Rouse referred all further questions to the Boston & Maine railroad police. Calls to that office, in Billerica, were not immediately returned.

Patricia Quinn, executive director of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, which oversees operation of the Downeaster, had no further information this morning.
