WILTON — When a furnace goes out on a weekend, some people need help to get it restarted, and for the past four years Western Maine Community Action Housing and Energy has done so through its emergency fund.

On Sunday, Sept. 8, the agency will hold its fourth annual golf tournament to benefit the fund. It will be held at Wilson Lake Country Club, 320 Weld Road. A shotgun start begins the scramble format tournament at noon.

The tournament previously has been held at Maple Lane golf course in Livermore but organizers decided to bring it to Franklin County this year, Jackson said.

“We hope to get people from the area to participate,” he said.

The tournament cost is $55 per person, $220 per team and includes a buffet lunch. Money raised will help income-eligible Franklin County community members with heating emergencies.

Last year, 17 clients were helped. A total of $200 in repairs per household is allowed.

When a furnace breaks down on a weekend, the emergency fund can help get a repairman to the home and get it back up and running, he said. The funds are set aside for those who need help right away, he added.

Unlike the ecumenical heating fund, ECU-HEAT, which provides for a 50-gallon emergency fuel delivery, this fund is more flexible and can be used for different things, including small repairs, he said. 

Sign-up sheets for the tournament are available at Wilson Lake Country Club. People may pick them up or call Nancy Pratt at 645-2016, he said. 

Golf carts need to be reserved and participants are asked to preregister.
