LEWISTON — Lewiston High School graduates Mary Turmel, Emily Craft and Dustin Morris have each been awarded a $1000 Banking on the Future Scholarship from Mechanics Savings Bank.

Craft is the daughter of Michael and Kelly Craft. While attending Lewiston High School, she was a member of the Avec Math and Science Club, president of the Diplomacy Club and member of the cross-country and outdoor track and field teams, where she held the position of team captain for both sports in 2011.

She represented Lewiston High School as a volunteer at the Balloon Festival and volunteered at an archaeological dig in Richmond. She is employed by the Italian Bakery and Shaw’s in Lewiston.

This fall she will study applied forensic sciences at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree, she plans to pursue a Ph.D. Her ultimate goal is to work in the crime labs for the FBI.

Turmel is the daughter of Thomas and Sherry Turmel. She was an executive board member for her class, a member of the National Honor Society and the winner of the local skills competition, Job Demo Open. She ran track throughout her high school career, was the captain of the indoor track team 2011-13 and captain of the outdoor track team 2012-13. She is the recipient of the 2013 All-Academic Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Award for indoor track, the 2012-13 Coaches Award for track, 2010 MVP and 2009 Fantastic Frosh.

Turmel was a junior volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital and currently volunteers at Knights of Columbus events. She has worked for the Lewiston Recreation Department as a track coach.

This fall, Turmel will major in political science. Her long-term goal is to obtain a Ph.D. and one day work in our nation’s capital.

Morris is the son of Rick and Elke Morris. While attending Lewiston High School, Morris was a member of the varsity swim team and swam anchor for the record-breaking 200 freestyle relay. He is the recipient of the Chris Campbell Memorial Award for outstanding male swimmer and the Boy’s Swimming Coaches Award. He is also a member of the Strings Orchestra and Math Team. Dustin was the president of the Diplomacy Club and the Frisbee Club.

Morris volunteered with the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and has spent four years fundraising for the swim team. He is a member of Maine Youth Leadership, an organization dedicated to motivating Maine’s future leaders and creating a network of civic-minded students who will better their communities through volunteering.

Morris will major in physics at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., this fall. His career goal is to become a scientist.
