1918 – 2013

LEWISTON — Irene Theresa Sutton-Robitaille, 95, formerly of Maison Marcotte, 100 Campus Ave., Lewiston, died Thursday, Aug. 29, at d’Youville Nursing Home.

Irene was born in Lewiston on April 22, 1918, the oldest child of John P. Sutton and Marie Anna Bolduc-Sutton. She attended local schools, graduating from Lewiston High School in 1936, and married Roland J. Robitaille on Sept. 23, 1946.

She was a bookkeeper at W.E. Cloutier for 14 years and W.S. Libbey Mill for 23 years, retiring in 1983.

Irene was active in Volunteers of Mary, Holy Cross Faith Sharing Group, Eucharistic Minister at Holy Cross Church, Retreatants Prayer Group, Senior Citizen Group at Holy Cross, Covenant 50 of St. Mary’s Hospital, Horizons 55 of Central Maine Medical Center and Daughters of Isabella.

Musically gifted, Irene played the piano, gathering friends and family for singing and holiday events. She was also known for her intricate knitted sweaters and fancy Christmas stockings made for grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and for her favorite recipes treasured by the family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roland J., and survived by her children, Henry of Montpelier, Vt., Carmen McIntosh and husband, Dennis, of New Gloucester and Roland and wife, Susan Hoyt, of Madison, N.H.; one sister, Patricia Sutton Stuart and husband, William, of Sabattus; one brother, Raymond Sutton and wife, Sylvia, of Hyde Park, N.Y.; and sister-in-law, Georgette Sutton of Hills Beach, Me. Irene was the beloved grandmother of Shelley, Jennifer, Karen, Annie, Renee and Desiree. She was also the favorite aunt to many nieces and nephews, and considered very special to her 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are many special friends.

The family is deeply grateful for the professional and loving care provided to Irene by the entire staff at d’Youville “3 West.”
