1932 – 2013

LEWISTON — Alfred “Fred” LaPointe Jr. of Lewiston passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 30, after an extended illness.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1932, in Danville, the son of the late Alfred LaPointe Sr. and Louise (Deschamps) LaPointe. He attended St. Louis Catholic School and St. Dominic Regional High School, where he was a star athlete in football, hockey and baseball. He graduated in 1951 and attended Southern Maine Community College, majoring in automotive technology.

While working at the Nash Garage in Lewiston in 1953, he was injured while working under a car and spent a month in the hospital. There, he met the love of his life, a student nurse named Geraldine “Geri” Ouellette. Fred and Geri were married on Sept. 4, 1954, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Auburn.

Fred was a hardworking man who provided for his family by laboring for many years as a carpenter for a number of local companies, including L & A Grocers. He finished up his longtime career as a field service representative at Rainbow Federal Credit Union.

He continued to enjoy playing and watching sports throughout his life and participated in softball until he was 54 years old. He was an avid sports fan for all of the New England teams and rarely missed a televised game, often flipping between TV channels with remote in hand.

Besides his great passion for his wife, children and grandchildren, Fred enjoyed gardening and puttering around the garage — and he was always ready to play a friendly game of cribbage. He was a very social guy who loved a good joke and could talk the ear off anyone who would listen, and he was up for a party, anytime.

He was a member of the Lewiston Elks and the Pastime Club, where he enjoyed meeting up with friends, old and new, and was active with his alumni class of St. Dom’s, serving on the planning committee for any reunions they held.

He is survived by his wife, Geri, of 59 years; their four children, Cheryl Saunders and her late husband, John, of Buckfield, Debra Perkins and her husband, Leonard, David LaPointe and his fiancee, Cindy Dooen, and Jeffrey LaPointe and his wife, Amanda, all of Auburn; seven grandchildren, Darcy Perkins-Phinney of Auburn, James Saunders of Buckfield, Katie LaPointe (Kenny) Hamilton of Auburn, Jason Saunders of Buckfield, Krysta LaPointe (Keith) Anderson of Hampden, Tori LaPointe and Tabby LaPointe of Colorado; and his five great-grandchildren, Danica, Brody, Aryanna, Griffin, Shayli, with one more due in November. He is also survived by Geri’s brothers, Ernest and Rena, Gerald and Georgia, Ray, Lee, John and Phyllis; Geri’s sister, Lorraine Lippert; his last two cousins, Jane (Roland) Hamel and Rita Dube; two lifelong best friends, Andy (Monique) Gagne and Bob (Pauline) Turcotte; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank-you to his doctors, Dr. Michael Isaac and Dr. Roy Ulin, as well as the staff of St Mary’s Center for Hyperbaric and Wound Care. We also thank the Rev. Suzanne Beaudoin for her support, prayers and spiritual guidance through the last several months of his life.
