Two Mainers in Congress applauded President Barack Obama’s decision to seek congressional approval before moving forward with military action against Syria.

However, they are not sure how they’ll vote.

“I will review the evidence and arguments with great care before deciding how I will vote on this difficult and important issue,” Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, said Saturday. “I believe the president is right to seek the support and approval of the United States Congress before moving forward with military action against the Assad regime.”

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said in a statement that she participated in a conference call on Syria on Saturday with Secretary of State John Kerry and national security officials.

“Those of us on the call had the opportunity to ask a wide variety of questions concerning the effectiveness, timing and strategic implications of the military strike that the president is advocating,” Collin said.

She said she agreed with Obama’s decision to seek congressional approval and hoped Senate and House leaders would reconvene this week to consider the president’s plan.

The Sun Journal was unable Saturday night to reach Rep. Michael Michaud, D-Maine. However, Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, issued a short statement.

“I’m inclined to vote no but will listen to the president and am glad he is seeking the approval of Congress,” she said.
