PARIS — On July 31, led by U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Ben Cardin (D-MD), the U.S. Senate unanimously approved a resolution designating the week beginning Sept.  8 as National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week. This year’s resolution marks the sixth consecutive year of recognition by the U.S. Senate for this essential workforce.

“Direct support professionals work tirelessly every day of the year administering skilled and compassionate care to seniors and individuals with disabilities,” Sen. Collins said. “I commend the important work carried out by direct support professionals that allows these individuals to stay connected with their community and their families, and I am pleased to have supported a resolution honoring all that these professionals do to help those in their care live meaningful and productive lives.”

The Progress Center is in the midst of planning a celebration to recognize the DSPs employed at the center. In addition to updates and teambuilding activities, there will also be time to relax, reconnect with employees from other departments and enjoy good food and camaraderie. This has become an annual event and eagerly anticipated by all.

Ron Raymond, chairman of the board of directors at The Progress Center, said, “On behalf of the entire board of directors, I would like to publicly recognize the DSPs at The Progress Center for the high quality of services and supports they provide to the individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities enrolled in programs at the center. Your dedication and commitment to the mission and vision of The Progress Center shows in the supports you provide to help enable these individuals to live meaningful, productive lives within their families and the community.”

The Progress Center is a nonprofit social service agency supporting 231 individuals and families with developmental and intellectual disabilities in 49 communities within 4 Maine counties.
