BRUNSWICK (AP) — The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority is getting $1.1 million from the federal government to create a general aviation terminal.

Rep. Chellie Pingree said the money will be used to renovate a former Navy air operations center with a goal of helping the Brunswick Executive Airport become a full-service general aviation airport.

The airport at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station is already seeing increased traffic.

The new terminal will provide passenger waiting space, pilot planning areas and additional space for a fixed based operator, which provides service and aviation fuel for aircraft.

The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority says 214 private-sector jobs have been created and 260 acres and 24 buildings conveyed to the private sector. Also, more than 700 students are enrolled at Southern Maine Community College.
