PARIS — Selectmen could confirm the hiring of a new police chief as early as next week, according to Board of Selectmen Chairman Bob Kirchherr.

The board intends to meet the final candidate during an executive session Wednesday evening.

Interim Chief Jerry Hinton, who has shepherded the hiring process for the town, said the meeting was scheduled for board members to meet the final candidate for the chief’s position in person.

Hinton, speaking Friday, was still finishing up his report on a thorough background check he conducted on the candidate.

He agreed that a possible confirmation date of Sept. 9 was soon, but said he believed he had vetted the candidate thoroughly. Everything that has been learned about the candidate so far from oral boards to the town manager’s interview makes him the right person to bring before the board, Hinton said.

“He is a genuine, good candidate for the police chief job here,” he said. “That’s my opinion.”

Kirchherr, speaking Friday, said it was “technically” possible that the board would be ready to confirm a hire at its scheduled meeting next week.

“That would be the earliest date that it could happen, because a recommendation would have to be made and the board would have to act on it,” Kirchherr said.

As a member of the screening committee that conducted oral interviews with the candidates, Kirchherr said he was very impressed with the process but would not comment on his take on the candidate.

“I think the process did a very good job of locating and identifying individuals who would be competent and good for the town. I think the process was as professionally done as I’ve seen anywhere.”

The town has been without a full-time police chief since March. Last November, longtime chief David Verrier resigned to take a position with the Maine Correctional Center in Windham.

Michael Dailey, who took over as interim chief after Verrier’s departure, left in March to join the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.
