PARIS — The Paris Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge concluded on Aug. 17, with 60 people attending an ice cream sundae party where reading rewards for participants were distributed and the drawing held for the tablet.

Eighty children participated in the library’s Reading Challenge, accumulating a total of 221,505 minutes. All children who read for 10 hours received a book bag. The 63 participants who read an additional 10 hours received gift certificates to the Fox School Farmers’ Market.

With 8,756 minutes, Makayla Biegeleisen was the top reader of the challenge, with Erin Fournier and Olivia Smith following. Each received $30 gift certificates. The next 20 highest readers received $10  gift certificates.

Elizabeth Dieterich was the winner of the tablet drawing. Gabrielle McAlister won the drawing for $50. For every 10 hours a child read during the summer, they received a chance in the drawings.

Reading through the summer helps children maintain and improve their reading skills, avoid the “summer slump,” and better prepare them for learning in the fall.
