WATERVILLE — Hannah Hearn of Auburn scored her first collegiate goal just 1:14 into the game and the Colby College field hockey team beat Williams College for the first time since 2001 with a 3-0 season-opening victory at Bill Alfond Field on Saturday.

Hearn, one of a number of impressive first-year players for head coach Tina Cormier, did not take long to make an impact. The Mules drew a penalty corner and the ball was pushed to Caitlin Murray up top. Murray quickly found Hearn on the left side and her shot gave the Mules a quick start.

UNE 4, USM 1

GORHAM — Four different players scored goals to lead the University of New England Nor’easters to a 4-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

After Southern Maine junior Peyton Dostie scored her fifth goal of the season to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, the Nor’easters stormed back with four unanswered goals to claim the 4-1 victory.Senior Hannah Tavella tallied the equalizer off of an assist from junior Hannah Warren of Harrison in the 15th minute.

BRUNSWICK — Rachel Kennedy tallied a season-opening hat trick as the Bowdoin College field hockey team opened its campaign with a 4-1 victory over Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at Ryan Field.

Bowdoin 2, Wesleyan 1

BRUNSWICK — Kiersten Turner scored the game-winning goal with 25:34 remaining in the second half to give the Bowdoin College women’s soccer team a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Pickard Field.

The Polar Bears, who got a key goal late in the opening half from Jamie Hofstetter, improve to 1-0-0 on the year while the Cardinals fall to 0-1-0.

Bates 2, Tufts 1

LEWISTON— Seniors Julia Rafferty and Kara Stefaniak each scored goals as Bates College women’s soccer defeated Tufts, 2-1, in a season-opening NESCAC win on Russell St. Field on Saturday afternoon.

Raffertytallied the second goal of the game for the Bobcats in the 62 minute heading the ball home off a free kick from sophomore Caitrin Griffin, who took the kick from about 35 yards out on the right side and found Rafferty on the back post

Williams 2, Colby 1

WATERVILLE — First-year Katie Wardlaw (San Marino, Calif.) scored with 16:08 left in the game as Williams College took a 2-1 victory over Colby College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference season-opening game Saturday.

Smith 3, UMF 0

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — A balanced, strong, attack led the Smith College soccer team to a 3-0 win over the University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 2-0 with the win, while the Beavers fall to 0-1 with the defeat.

USM 4, MMA 0

WATERVILLE — Senior forward Jordan Grant scored two goals for the second straight game as the University of Southern Maine Huskies shut out the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners 4-0 Saturday afternoon in the second day of play in the Terrier Women’s Soccer Classic hosted by Thomas College.

Senior Katie Cobb of Lewiston and sophomore Marissa Temple split the goalkeeper duties for USM as each played a half. Cobb made two saves in the first half.

Williams 1, Colby 0

WATERVILLE — The Colby College men’s soccer team stayed right with second-ranked Williams College for the entire game, but the Ephs got a big goal from first-year Patrick Gordon to pull out a 1-0 victory on Saturday in the season opener for both NESCAC teams.

Wesleyan 3, Bowdoin 1

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Chris Kafina scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the Wesleyan University men’s soccer team to a 3-1 win over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon at Pickard Field.

Tufts 3, Bates College 0

LEWISTON — Bates College men’s soccer fell to Tufts University, 3-0, in its NESCAC opener on Saturday afternoon at Russell St. Field.

Bates created scoring chances on a couple of long throw ins from sophomore Wes Shrewsbury and a dangerous cross from junior Nick Ford (Columbus, Ohio) but could not convert. First-year Peabo Knoth and senior Tyler Grees each put shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the second period.

UMF finishes second

BANGOR — University of Maine at Farmington freshman Katie Flanders finished sixth overall out of 43 runners in the field to lead UMF women’s cross country to a second-place finish at Saturday’s Husson University Invitational.

Flanders posted a time of 22:50, and was one of two UMF runners among the top 10. Fellow newcomer Emma Pidden was ninth with a time of 23:52. Cadyn Wilson was 13 (24:51), Emily Franklin was 20 (26:51) and Amelia Tacheny finished 22(27:08).

Men’s cross country

USM rolls

BANGOR — University of Southern Maine senior Briar Beede was the overall winner as the Huskies placed seven runners among the first ten finishers to take the team title at the Husson Harrier Classic run Saturday at Saxl Park.

The Huskies tallied 24 points to outdistance runner-up Maine Maritime Academy, which finished with 53. Thomas College finished third scoring 78 points, followed by the University of Maine Farmington with 100 and host Husson with 121.

T he Huskies took positions 7-10 to seal the team victory. Junior Kinnon Church, sophomore Chris Dunn, junior Kevin Desmond of Monmouth and junior Jon Clement crossed the line within 16 seconds of each other.

Women’s tennis

Plymouth State 5, USM 4

PLYMOUTH, N.H. — Trailing 2-1 after the doubles points were played out, the Plymouth State University Panthers rallied to win four out of six singles points to earn a 5-4 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women’s tennis match Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers earned victories at second singles and third through sixth singles to claim the victory. Senior Mary Moran won 6-2, 6-3 over Plymouth State senior Molly Heartfield at first singles, while sophomore Courtney Aldrich of Lewiston took a 6-3, 6-2 win at third singles against Panther senior Jane Duggan.
