1942 – 2013

PORTLAND — Roy Burton Newton, 70, of Gorham, N.H., passed away Monday, Sept. 9, at Maine Medical Center.

Roy was born on Dec. 20, 1942, at home on Flat Road in West Bethel, a son of Burton Newton and Ida (Card) Newton. He was raised in West Bethel and was a 1962 graduate of Gould Academy. He attended Western New England College in Springfield, Mass., and Thomas College in Waterville.

Roy was the owner and operator of Newton and Tebbets Wood Turning Mill for more than 20 years. He was a strong community person and strong supporter of the community he lived in. Roy was a member and past master of the Bethel Lodge 97 AF & AM, Kora Shrine Temple, American Legion Post 82 in Gorham, N.H., and became affiliated with Gorham-Sabatis Lodge 73 F & AM this past year. He was also a member of the Oxford County Funsters. He was very proud of his Masonic and Shrine affiliation.

Family members include his wife of 47 years, Mary Ellen (Wentzell) Newton of Gorham, N.H.; a son, Scott Newton and wife, Betty, of Gorham, N.H.; a daughter, Julie Dale and companion, Eric Gagne, of Gorham, N.H.; six grandchildren, Kyle Newton, Samantha Newton, Andrew Dale, Matthew Rich, Katie Rich and Katie Gagne; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; an infant daughter, Jane; and a sister and brother.
