WILTON — Local police are investigating an assault on a woman outside the East Wilton Post Office on Wednesday night.

A man driving past called police about 8:41 p.m. after he saw a man hit the woman who had a child about 5 years old with her, Wilton officer Derek Daley said. They were on the side of the road outside the post office.

The driver stopped and hollered at the man who got into a white Ford Ranger and took off. The driver then went to help the woman and she fled with the child to the Cross Street area.

Sgt. Chad Abbott visited residences along the street but was unable to find the woman, he said. Residents couldn’t identify anyone from the description.

A Maine State Police trooper was called to search Temple Road, Morrison Hill and Voter Hill for the vehicle. Farmington police searched Route 43 to Wilton but neither found the vehicle, he said.

The man was described as being about 5 feet, 5 inches tall and had a full beard. He appeared to be intoxicated. The woman may have suffered a broken nose, Daley said.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Wilton Police Department at 645-3876.
